We touched base with Edible Beauty's Founder, Naturopath and Nutritionist, Anna Mitsios. Keep reading to discover her top tips for ageless skin...

Three things a naturopath does differently when it comes to anti-ageing:

So many women come to me looking for the next ingredient, active or procedure that will eliminate their fine lines and wrinkles.

As a 41-year-old and the founder of a natural skincare and wellness brand, I have been on this journey myself, many times and I am determined to avoid using Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs) and injectables but to still achieve that plump, dewy and beautiful skin we are all seeking (and deserve)!

When it comes to achieving these results it is all about choosing the right pure actives, for your skin and strengthening the skin barrier, whilst simultaneously boosting skin collagen production (internally and externally) and reducing trans-epidermal water loss.

Below are my 3 favourite tips for ageless skin:

1. Boost collagen internally

When it comes to boosting collagen, my approach is all about giving your body what it needs to do it! And a huge part of this is Vitamin C. It is really one of the key nutrients to collagen building, so ensure your diet is full of it (think broccoli, kiwi fruit, guava, berries and capsicum). I also feel that beta carotene is underestimated. Carotenoids (you will find in sweet potato, pumpkin, carrots and Macqui berries) can help to protect your collagen and give you a beautiful golden glow naturally!

Your body takes Vitamin C along with glycine, proline and lysine and transforms them into the building blocks for collagen.  This is why eating protein is also important when it comes to beautiful skin.

If you are unsure if your diet is containing all these components, I have made it easy to take them in the form of a powerhouse beauty boosting powder containing Vegan Collagen Amino Acids (in the same profile as human collagen), Antioxidants, Vitamin C and beta Carotene along with gut support. The perfect collagen booster if you are unsure about taking animal collagen (due to purity and animal cruelty), want to protect your existing collagen from breaking down and want naturally plump, firm and hydrated skin.

2. Think cleansing milks and ceramides vs acid

Glycolic peels, lactic acid and synthetic AHAs provide the temptation of bright and clear skin. However, if you are prone to skin sensitivity or pigmentation may need to be used with caution. My preference is building the skin barrier to improve skin resilience and provide a structural base for strong and firm skin. The first step to do this is to make sure you are using the right cleanser.  If your cleanser is foaming (even if natural), it is likely to be disrupting your skin’s acid mantle, accelerating the ageing process. Switch to a cleansing milk that is contains oils to purify and natural AHAs (not synthetic) to refine and brighten.

The next step is rebuilding your skin barrier. If you have yet to try ceramides, I highly recommend introducing them to your skincare routine, in particular during the winter. Think of ceramides as the mortar between the bricks which are your skin cells. They help to hold skin together by forming a protective layer that limits moisture loss (trans-epidermal water loss) and protects skin from external stress.

3. Incorporate super-antioxidant, topical plant-based Vitamin C

When it comes to naturally boosting collagen production, we all know vitamin C is king! As a naturopath my philosophy which it comes to vitamin C in skincare is focused on incorporating plant-based C in your skincare formulations and also ingesting plant-based C in foods and supplements. Unlike synthetic vitamin C, plant-based C does not oxidise as it is encapsulated in plant cell walls which ensures we are delivering potent, active vitamin C onto your skin. Natural plant-based C is not limited to use in the evening as does not leave skin prone to UV sensitivity. It comes hand with an abundance of antioxidants which work to protect the skin from UV and free radical damage. Taken internally plant-based C provides a natural building block to boost collagen production, improve capillary strength and brighten the appearance of skin.  Look out for plant extracts which are rich sources of C including Kakadu Plum, Edelweiss, Bilberry and Guava extracts.
